Made some progress on the welding hood last night. I hope to get some duct work this weekend. Also installed a MIG gun holster.
I turned some cedar on the lathe. It smells great.

Autocad Fusion 360 is a CAD program that is free for hobbyists. I used it to design an enclosure for my CNC machine at home. All of the parts (plywood and foam) are rectangles of various sizes. There are 30 pieces and writing down the dimensions of 30 rectangles would be boring.
So, I found a free plug-in to export a parts list with dimensions. Then I found a free program to layout the parts on the stock plywood and foam sheets. The program samples a million possibilities to find the most efficient layout. It was written by Gary Darby and is on the Delphi for Fun page. Here are the links/files: Parts list Fusion plugin CSV-BOM Cut list program You have to re-arrange the CSV-BOM layout a little, then open the text file in the cut list program. Here is the text file. "Required" is a list of the parts you need. "Available" is a list of the stock available. "Decimalseparator." may not be needed, not sure ### Decimalseparator. We set up the wood planer and router table. Others were working on coding and robot projects.
We made a 'live-edge' mouse pad from a piece of firewood. You can see the progress below. Probably not really useful as a mouse pad, but a fun project. Tool training Wednesday is tomorrow. I plan to set up the wood planer, but will meet with anyone who wants to learn anything else. I also might try out our new welder.
Thursday is a Wood Turning night, same deal. Members can bring a wood blank if you want to make something. Get them from Mann Tools. About 10x10x3 inches is good We got our new tools! They include:
We had our first group learn on Python last night. It was great. We followed an online video class. If you want to come to the next one, but feel you will be behind, don't worry. We spent two hours and only got through about 8 mins of video!
Many thanks to our more experienced members for guiding us! The next one will probably be this weekend. Keep an eye on the calendar. We now have a twitter account for when checking email or facebook is just too taxing, ha ha. Our account is @ColaMakerspace.
On the other hand, it might not be working yet, stay tuned 1/24/20 - Ok, now twitter is working. We will cross post our blogs to facebook and twitter. Meet at 6 pm this Sunday Jan 26. This is group learning, not a class, per se. We can follow Lynda courses, youtube, etc. My first goal is to learn to automate boring stuff, like renaming files. Should be fun!
Who wants to race a soap box derby car? Everyone!
West Columbia is having a race soon. Anyone interested in building a car? https://www.kineticderbyday.com/ Tires: https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_tires-wheels+spoked-wheels+pneumatic-spoked-wheels We are going to meet up and hang out at the space this Wednesday 6 pm to around 8. Lots of fun last time, thanks to the new people! We can also do some training - bring any files you want to try out on our laser cutter, etc.
Shopsmith - we have a donated shopsmith in need of some parts. On Wednesday I'd like get the model number and identify the parts we need. See this link: https://shopsmith.com/service/index.htm |
